Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks should be stored in a different complex or building so as to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure which can just be accessible by authorized personnel. It is important for the safety of the operator, as well as everyone they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This job can use retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be utilized. It is also important to always have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. In addition, anyone who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also has to be trained to use the fire extinguisher safely and effectively. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a forklift should be properly trained. This training covers a classroom portion in addition to hands-on training. When the training sessions have been completed, the person needs to be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the proper way of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also involves site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving.
Medical Treatment
There must be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center located inside the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are used on site. This would also cover the propane that is used to refuel the unit, along with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all employees all the time. If any exposure incident occurs for instance, the person has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Usually, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is considered necessary, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a medical professional if you fear it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
